One-Line Bio

I write therefore I am. My six-word memoir? Teetered on the precipice then jumped.

I grew up on the Susquehanna River in northeastern Pennsylvania, spent many years on a downtown creek in Ithaca, New York, and now live near the mighty Columbia in Portland, Oregon. I attended Oberlin College in the 1970s, Cornell University in the 1980s, and got my M.A in English/Creative Writing from the State University of New York at Binghamton in 1994. A former university administrator, my writing has received an Oregon Literary Fellowship, the James Jones First Novel Fellowship, and has been nominated for four Pushcart Prizes.

Chapbooks include The Hours of Us (Finishing Line Press, 2007) and Eternity a Coal’s Throw (Burning River, 2012). My full-length poetry collection, Every Door Recklessly Ajar (Cayuga Lake Books) appeared in 2015; my long poem, Great Hunger, was published by Anchor & Plume Press in 2016. Recent poems have appeared in Forage, Posit, Raven Chronicles, riverbabble, Smoky Blue Literary and Arts Magazine and Visitant. In 2015, I was the lead poetry editor for VoiceCatcher’s 10th anniversary anthology. A complete list of my awards and publications is at

Reading, writing, not arithmetic. The nerdy art and craft of poetry. Walking and yoga. Street fairs, parades, and disco. Movies in real theatres. Theatre on real stages. Art in real galleries. Lovely meals in real restaurants. Bob Dylan as DJ on Theme Time Radio Hour. All kinds of music especially 1930s jazz. Blue-eyed half-Siamese cats. Venice, Italy!
